For more than 20 years prior, the Penang Welfare Association For The Mentally Retarded Children had been applying for land for a new school for the differently abled children. In 2018, the groundbreaking ceremony for the new school was held for a two storey, 20 rooms building complete with a multi-purpose hall, playground, utilities and basic amenities.
Together with the effort of the State Government and multiple generous parties, Jan 2020 finally saw to the realization of that dream- A majestic building which will house 180 children who are differently abled. The mission of Suria School is to provide equal opportunities in education for children who are differently abled, to help realise the aspirations of these special children and to achieve their fullest potential.
Heeding the calls by the Women’s Ministry and the Deputy Prime Minister to be more inclusive of the special needs community, and to work towards achieving a minimum of 1 percent employment for the differently abled in this nation, Kiwanis Club of Penang Central is working jointly with the school to provide training programmes for underprivileged youth with intellectual disabilities, to prepare them for manageable vocations and work.
